Matt vs gloss tiles: which finish for which room

The finish you choose affects safety, cleaning and the look of the space. Here is a simple guide.

Matt finish

Best for: bathroom floors, kitchens, outdoor areas and high-traffic commercial floors. The non-reflective surface offers better grip when wet and hides dust, smudges and water marks well.

Gloss finish

Best for: bathroom and kitchen walls, splashbacks and low-traffic floors where you want a polished, light-reflecting look. Gloss surfaces wipe clean easily but show water spots and can be slippery underfoot.

Quick rule

Wet floors = matt. Feature walls and splashbacks = gloss. When in doubt for floors, choose matt.
